Beauty and the Beak
Author: Deborah Lee Rose and Jane Veltkamp
Publisher: Persnickety Press 2019
After a bald eagle, later named Beauty, receives a devastating injury to her beak, a wildlife rehabber and an engineer use 3D printing to give the bird a new life. Nice close-up photos and clear descriptions bring the reader up close, engaging children and helping them see how a new technology can be used to help wildlife. The book is unusual in that it contains 18 pages of back matter including more information about Beauty and general information about eagles.

Karl’s New Beak: 3D Printing Builds a Bird a Better Life
Author: Lela Nargi
Illustrator: Harriet Popham
Publisher: Capstone Editions 2023
Karl is an Abyssinian Ground Hornbill living in a zoo. A bone defect caused his lower beak to wear away, making it hard for Karl to eat. A team works together to make Karl a new beak. The book has an interesting design that includes both photos and illustrations. A lot of detail is given about the process used to make the beak but the writing style is very child friendly. A glossary is included.
Both books tell stories about solving the problem of repairing a bird’s beak. I really like both books and I think they would be great for STEM/STEAM classrooms because students will see how teams work together, the process of working toward the solution and the failures as well as the final solution.
