Bookcover Squirrels Leap, Squirrels Sleep

Squirrels Leap, Squirrels Sleep

Author: April Pulley Sayre

Illustrator: Steve Jenkins

Publisher: Henry Holt & Co., 2016

Age range: 4-8 yrs

In clipped descriptions, reminiscent of squirrel activity, April Pulley Sayre brings us into the world of squirrels. Though the word count is short, the book teaches much about squirrel life in a fun and engaging way. And Steve Jenkins’ cut paper illustrations are perfect as usual.

Bookcover The Most Magnificent Thing

The Most Magnificent Thing

Author/Illustrator: Ashley Spires

Publisher: Kids Can Press, 2013

Age range: 3-7 yrs

I love books that help children see that mistakes are a necessary, and even beneficial, part of life. Ashley Spires creates a character that perseveres through many trials and failures and eventually surprises herself with the final solution to her magnificent thing. Her adorable dog side kick makes it even more fun. A great connection for future scientists and engineers.

Bookcover Soul of an Octopus

For adults:

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness

Author: Sy Montgomery

Publisher: Atria Books, 2016

Pages: 272

I think octopus and squid are some of the most interesting animals on the planet. Molluscs in general are considered simpler animals, but seeing an octopus in action, as Sy Montgomery describes in this book, opens a window into just how intelligent these animals are. Montgomery’s writing style is engaging and heartfelt. I recently watched a Netflix program about the life of one octopus that made a tremendous difference in a human’s life and I highly recommend.
