Rain, Rain, Rain

rain standing in yard

As I look across my water-logged yard, part of me wants to complain but I just can’t.  Texas has been in a drought for several years and though I wish the rains would pace themselves and spread out a little more over the summer, I still appreciate it whenever it does come.  I hate that the storms we had recently also brought some high winds and tornadoes which caused damage and injuries.  That is the not so good part of our spring stormy weather.

But water is life.  Though my dog is reluctant to get wet, there is nothing I like better than putting on my rubber boots and sloshing through the puddles. Birds flit back and forth through the tree branches, enjoying the shower.  The green of all the growing things is intense and beautiful.  The smell of damp soil takes me back to gardening with my dad.  The gentle dripping off the roof-so soothing.

Water is such a unique material.  Almost every other material gets more dense as it cools down, causing it to sink.  But not water.  The crystals formed by water molecules cause it to become less dense.  Earth has just the right temperatures so that it can exist as a solid, liquid and gas.  Living things are mostly made of water and can’t live long without it.  So rain, rain, come again, anyday.

Climate change is changing weather patterns  Besides the usually dry places in the world, other locations are starting to have water shortage issues while others are receiving record rainfall and record flooding.  Another reason we have to treat climate change like the immediate and critical problem it is.

For right now today, I will enjoy the rain and be thankful.

I do blog posts in pairs. One introduces the topic and my thoughts about that topic, the second offers some picture book recommendations. Stay tuned for the books coming shortly.
